About Us:  The charity for people with diabetes.

Diabetes UK is the leading charity working for people with diabetes and your support will help this vital work in fields of research, campaigning and care & support. Diabetes UK funds research for a future without diabetes while supporting children and adults to live with diabetes today.

Diabetes is one of the biggest health problems facing the UK today. There are over 2 million people with diabetes in the UK and an estimated 750,000 are living with diabetes but are unaware of it.  If left undiagnosed or poorly managed there is a significant increase in the risk of life threatening complications such as heart disease, strokes or kidney failure. The UK is currently experiencing an epidemic in people becoming diagnosed with diabetes and with at least 100,000 new cases per year; diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges of the 21st century.

As the leading national diabetes charity in the UK our role is not only to support people affected by diabetes and raise money to find a cure but to raise awareness of the seriousness of the risk factors and importance of  prevention through lifestyle choices which includes eating a healthy balanced diet.

East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) offer a range of services to support children and young people with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions and their families.

We provide care and support within our three hospices which are based in Milton - Cambridge, Quidenham - Norfolk and Ipswich - Suffolk. We also provide care within the family home and in other settings.

We believe that helping our sick children to make the most of their precious time is all important. Our hospices are vibrant places offering fun, friendship, learning, laughter and care; places of refuge where children and parents can find help and encouragement in the midst of their anxiety.

We provide terminal care for children at the end of their life, as well as on-going palliative care (the term used when there is no cure but symptoms and pain need to be controlled), and respite care which offers families the chance of a break from the constant medication and attention a sick child needs. We also offer bereavement support, both before and after a child dies, for as long as the family needs it.

Our aim
Helping people with Down's syndrome to live full and rewarding lives

Who we are
The only organisation in this country focusing solely on all aspects of living successfully with Down's syndrome. We have grown in 30 years from being a local parent support group to a national charity with over 19,000 members, a national office in Teddington Middlesex, offices in Northern Ireland and Wales and a regional development team. Despite this, the organisation is run by a total staff of only 38 (many of them part time), and a network of around 100 regional volunteer-led support groups.

Our mission

  • We provide information and support for people with Down's syndrome, their families and carers, as well as being a resource for interested professionals.
  • We strive to improve knowledge of the condition.
  • We champion the rights of people with Down's syndrome.

What we do
Our organisation is divided into various teams, including:

  • Information - run the helpline; provide info about all aspects of living with Down's syndrome including welfare, education and health; advise new parents or anyone experiencing difficulties

  • Fundraising - responsible for raising money for the association through events, sponsorship and trusts

  • Communications - give key messages to the media, public and professionals; influence policy making; reponsible for external publications

  • Training - run courses throughout the UK for members, professionals and carers

  • Membership - responsible for all administration surrounding new members, existing members and affiliated groups

Kidney Research UK has a very clear aim and purpose; to fund research into kidney disease to save lives. We have over £9 million committed to research at any one time, awarded as grants to doctors, nurses and researchers across the UK.

Over 2.5 million people in the UK suffer from chronic kidney disease; a number which is estimated to reach epidemic proportions over the next decade. As the system of donation and transplantation becomes increasingly overwhelmed, society will look more and more towards research as a means of solving the problems of kidney disease. And as the key funding body for renal research, our charity will assume an even greater importance.

We also award support grants to those with kidney disease, so that they can cope with the unexpected costs of their condition. We raise awareness of the importance of kidney health - particularly amongst at-risk communities - and the positive steps that can be taken to protect the kidneys.

It is only the generosity of the public which allows us to do this. We run fundraising events such as abseils and walks, operate a national lottery, and offer many rewarding volunteering opportunities. We also ask companies to support us by making us their charity of the year, sponsoring our events, and offering matched giving to employees raising funds for charity.
